In Cherished Remembrance of G’Kiyah Lewis

In Loving Memory of G’Kiyah Lewis

The neighborhoods of Malden and Mattapan are mourning the tragic death of 18-year-old G’Kiyah Lewis, who sadly lost her life due to a triple shooting incident that took place on Saturday, October 11, 2025, along Hiawatha Road in Mattapan. What started as a response by District B-3 officers to a ShotSpotter alert quickly transformed into yet another grim illustration of how gun violence continues to devastate families, friendships, and entire communities.

At just 18 years old — a young woman on the brink of adulthood, brimming with potential, aspirations, and hopes for her future — G’Kiyah was one among three individuals who were shot that day. Despite her courageous fight for almost a month, her life sadly ended on Friday, November 7, 2025, in the hospital. While the two male victims are in recovery from their wounds, G’Kiyah’s family is now faced with an emptiness that can never be replaced.

G’Kiyah was more than merely another name in the news. She was a cherished daughter, friend, classmate, and beloved individual whose essence illuminated the lives of those around her. Possessing a smile that could uplift a room, a vibrant voice, and a compassionate heart, those who had the privilege to know her remember her kindness, laughter, dreams, and the future she envisioned for herself and her loved ones. Her life was at its beginning — and it should have gone on.

Her death represents a loss that extends far beyond her immediate family. It is a tragedy experienced by classrooms, circles of friends, neighborhoods, and all the young people who identified with her. She should have had the opportunity to grow, learn, explore, evolve, and thrive. Now, her narrative serves as a crucial reminder of the immediate necessity to safeguard our youth, elevate our communities, and unite against the violence that continues to rob us of so many vibrant, beautiful lives.
