John Beam Obituary Death News: Renowned Laney College Coach Shot on School Grounds; Inquiry in Progress

OAKLAND, Calif. — A shooting that occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Laney College campus resulted in injuries to a beloved figure within the athletic department, as reported by various sources. The event took place around noon in the 900 block of Fallon Street, specifically within the Laney Fieldhouse, which is next to the college's football field.

According to sources who informed KTVU, the individual injured is John Beam, a renowned football coach at Laney College who dedicated 45 years to guiding young athletes, influencing many both on the field and in their lives. Beam concluded his coaching career last year and recently assumed the position of athletic director at the college.

Officials have not yet disclosed the identity of the injured party, nor has Laney College confirmed any names, merely stating that a "senior member" of the athletic department had been shot.

“A senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them—and their loved ones—in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time,” the college said in a statement. “Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment.”

The current status of the victim has yet to be revealed.

The shooting prompted an urgent campus alert that was issued by the Peralta Community College District at 12:16 p.m. The alert cautioned about an active shooter reported near the Fieldhouse and directed students and faculty to stay away from the area and secure themselves indoors. Authorities later confirmed that there was no active shooter situation; instead, it was a specific incident involving one person being shot.

Law enforcement reported that the suspect fled the scene wearing dark clothing. No arrests have been made, and investigators are actively pursuing leads to locate the shooter and understand the motive for the attack.

Laney College, deeply affected by the occurrence, is providing support services for both students and staff while the community waits anxiously for news on the condition of the injured individual.
