Vincent P. Houben’s Legacy Spans Public

Born in the Netherlands, Vincent came to the United States as a child and grew up in Oakland, California. He later made San Francisco his home during the 1980s, becoming part of the Bay Area community he would know for decades. Friends and colleagues remembered his humor and approachable nature, along with his ability to make people feel noticed and valued. Those qualities became an important part of the relationships he developed throughout his life.

Vincent’s professional career was marked by an extraordinary 44 years of service with the California Public Utilities Commission, where he worked as an Information Technology Specialist 2. His career reflected both technical expertise and a willingness to help others. Colleagues valued his knowledge, patience, and ability to explain complicated systems in understandable ways. His readiness to mentor coworkers also made his contribution about more than completing technical responsibilities; he helped others gain confidence and understanding.

Away from work, Vincent found enjoyment in activities that reflected his social and creative interests. He hosted dinner gatherings and enjoyed music, films, opera, and Marvel movies, often creating opportunities for friends to spend time together. He was also known for his distinctive collection of shoes. These interests offered another glimpse into his personality and his enjoyment of experiences that could be shared with people around him.

Fitness was another meaningful part of Vincent’s life. During the 1990s, he competed in bodybuilding competitions, an experience that required sustained discipline and commitment. His involvement in bodybuilding became one chapter in a life that included professional dedication alongside personal pursuits. Whether through his career, friendships, entertainment interests, or fitness, Vincent developed passions that gave his life variety and helped shape the memories others now carry.

Vincent is survived by his partner of 20 years, Daniel Berrios, as well as his siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, September 28, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. at Alameda Funeral and Crematory Services in Alameda, California. The gathering will provide an opportunity for those who knew Vincent to remember his life and the relationships that meant so much to him.

For the people who shared Vincent’s life, his legacy reaches beyond his 44-year professional career. It can be found in the coworkers he mentored, the friends he welcomed, the gatherings he helped create, and the family and partner who remained important throughout his years. Vincent P. Houben will be remembered for service, generosity, humor, and connection. The memories built across his years in the Bay Area will continue through the people whose lives he touched.
