CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Halloween festivity turned devastating early Saturday morning when 17-year-old Amari Cooper was shot and killed at a party located on Old Plank Road in Charlotte.
Law enforcement reports indicate that a brawl erupted during the event, resulting in several gunshots being discharged. Observers noted that attendees began to flee in panic, but Amari was hit by an errant bullet amidst the turmoil.
At around 12:26 a.m., first responders arrived at the location. Paramedics discovered Amari with a critical gunshot injury. He was swiftly transported to a local hospital by ambulance; however, despite attempts to save him, he was later confirmed deceased.
Officials have not provided details regarding any possible suspects, and it is still unknown if Amari was involved in the fight that led to the shooting.
Amari was enrolled at West Charlotte High School, where peers and educators fondly recall him as intelligent, kind, and full of promise. His abrupt passing has deeply affected friends, family, and the school community, leaving them in sorrow.
There is also no evidence suggesting that this incident is linked to another altercation that took place at West Charlotte High School on Halloween, during which footage captured a police officer aggressively restraining a student in the school’s bus parking area.
As detectives continue their efforts to uncover the facts, those close to Amari are left mourning the untimely loss of a young individual.
