Steven Jason Obituary News: Individual Taken into Custody in Gold Hill Murder Close to Interstate 5

 GOLD HILL, Ore. — Authorities have detained a man following a devastating homicide that took place on Thursday morning close to Interstate 5 in the rural area of Gold Hill. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) has confirmed the arrest of 34-year-old Michael Lloyd Balestra Jr. from Gold Hill in relation to the death of 47-year-old Steven Jason Worthington, who resided in Shady Cove.





Investigators reported that Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon (ECSO) fielded numerous 911 calls shortly after 8:01 a.m. that described a seriously injured individual trying to flag down passing cars on the southbound side of I-5 near mile marker 42.5. Deputies and emergency responders from Rogue River Fire District 1 arrived quickly and initiated life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, Worthington was declared deceased by 8:36 a.m.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Steven Worthington during this tragic period," stated the Sheriff’s Office in a public announcement.

After the event, investigators from the Oregon State Police, Rogue River Police Department, and the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU) began searching for the suspect and his vehicle. At approximately 10:00 a.m., ECSO dispatchers received a notice regarding an individual behaving suspiciously in the 1000 block of Galls Creek Road. Deputies promptly arrived and confirmed the identity of the man as the alleged perpetrator.Balestra was apprehended without any complications and was taken to the Jackson County Jail, facing multiple charges including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree theft, unlawful weapon use, unauthorized vehicle use, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

During the investigative process, the southbound lanes of I-5 were narrowed to a single lane near the incident site, and nearby roadways were briefly closed off. The Oregon State Police Crime Lab was engaged to gather forensic evidence.

Officials have assured that there is no continuing risk to the public as the inquiry proceeds. The MADIU, which comprises detectives from various local and state law enforcement agencies, is managing the case. Additional information will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
