Authorities have revealed the identities of those killed in a mass shooting that took place on Sunday at Bondi Beach in Sydney during the "Chanukah by the Sea" event. The incident resulted in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries, transforming what was meant to be a serene Hanukkah celebration into a horrifying scene.
The deceased victims are between the ages of 10 and 87 and comprise community members, spiritual leaders, and families who participated in the occasion.
The identified individuals include Matilda Britvan (10), Rabbi Eli Schlanger (41), Alex Kleytman (87), Dan Elkayam (27), Rabbi Yaakov Levitan (39), Reuven Morrison (62), Marika Pogany (82), Tibor Weitzen (78), Edith Brutman (68), Boris Gurman (69), Sofia Gurman (61), and Peter Meagher (61). Officials have stated that further identifications are still in progress.
According to the police, the suspected perpetrators have been identified as Sajid Akram (50) and his son Naveed Akram (24). Sajid Akram was shot dead at the scene, while Naveed Akram is currently in serious condition.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has labeled the shooting an act of terrorism and has proposed initiatives for more stringent gun control laws as the country grieves for the victims.
The investigation is still ongoing as officials strive to uncover the complete details surrounding the attack and extend assistance to the grieving families and the broader community.
