Accident Details
Per the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash transpired just before 7:00 p.m. on U.S. Highway 79, situated between the communities of Rockdale and Milano, close to County Road 334. Traffic was moderate, with vehicles moving in both directions as families traveled for Christmas Eve gatherings.
Investigators indicated that the sequence of events started when a 60-year-old individual from Lufkin was operating a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck while pulling a trailer. According to DPS representatives, the driver did not remain in his lane, leading the truck to veer into oncoming traffic. This significant mistake resulted in a head-on crash with a 2019 Ford Escape driven by Cooper Andrew Elsik.
Chain-Reaction Collision
The impact from the initial collision caused Elsik’s vehicle to go out of control. Shortly thereafter, the Ford Escape collided with a 2026 Infiniti QX60 that was following behind the Dodge Ram. The resulting chain-reaction wreck inflicted major damage on all three involved vehicles, scattering debris across the highway.
Emergency personnel arrived quickly at the location, but despite their attempts to save them, Cooper Andrew Elsik and his passenger were declared dead at the scene due to the critical nature of their injuries. In light of the magnitude of the crash and the ongoing investigation, U.S. Highway 79 was closed for several hours from Highway 77 to Highway 190. This shutdown enabled officials to carry out a thorough investigation, remove the wreckage, and secure the road's safety. The highway was reopened to traffic around 11:20 p.m.
