It is with great sadness and deep regret that we announce the death of Deacon Jack McKenna, a devoted servant of God and a treasured member of St. Joseph Church located in Garden City, New York. The news of his passing has shocked and deeply saddened everyone who knew him, loved him, and was enriched by his ministry. The life of Deacon Jack exemplified a faith characterized by humility, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to Christ and His Church.
Deacon Jack exemplified a robust and unwavering faith. Despite facing his own health issues and personal struggles, he held firmly onto hope and trust in God. His calm fortitude and serene assurance provided solace to many. He was always available to lend an ear, offer prayers, or provide gentle spiritual direction, sharing his insight with compassion rather than judgment.
His dedication to the Church reached far beyond the confines of St. Joseph. Deacon Jack positively impacted numerous lives through his ministry, performing marriages, baptizing infants, praying for the ill, and offering support to families during times of sorrow and bereavement. For many, he was there during life's most sacred events, leaving behind a lasting spiritual legacy that will never fade.
Deacon Jack was also a loyal friend to Long Island National Cemetery, where he consistently supported the families of veterans and staff with respect and honor. Throughout the years, he led many funeral services, providing words of hope and consolation to those grieving their loved ones who served our country. His presence brought tranquility, and his prayers infused strength during heartbreaking times. He was held in high regard and had great affection from all at LINC, where his absence will be deeply felt.
Not long ago, Deacon Jack participated in the St. Joseph parish community’s Christmas Tree Lighting on December 6, 2025—a moment now cherished as one of his last shared blessings. His presence with the parish members was a true gift, reflecting the joy and faith that defined his life.
A Funeral Mass will take place on December 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church in Garden City. The parish extends its sincere condolences to Deacon Jack’s relatives, friends, fellow congregants, and all who grieve his loss. We come together in prayer, expressing gratitude for his dedicated service and the love he generously offered.
May he find eternal rest in the peace of Christ whom he served so faithfully.
