DonnaLee Saleh Passes Away: 86-Year-Old Victim of Heartbreaking Fire in Lake County, Illinois

DonnaLee Saleh Death and Obituary – The community of Lake County, Illinois, is in mourning due to the passing of DonnaLee Saleh, an 86-year-old resident from unincorporated Spring Grove, who sadly lost her life after a house fire occurred on Friday, December 19, 2025. The event took place in the Lotus Woods area, leaving neighbors, emergency responders, and local authorities grappling with the tragic consequences.

Authorities report that the fire ignited at a residence on the 38300 block of North 6th Avenue. Emergency personnel from the Fox Lake Fire Protection District, along with deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene around noon following notifications about a structure fire with individuals potentially trapped inside.

When firefighters arrived, they were met with dense smoke and fierce flames engulfing the home. A 52-year-old man, who was situated on the second floor, made a heroic effort to reach Saleh and another 55-year-old woman still inside. However, the extreme heat and quickly accumulating smoke forced him to retreat, preventing him from completing the rescue.

Braving perilous conditions, firefighters swiftly entered the dwelling and managed to rescue both women. Despite immediate efforts to save her life at the site, DonnaLee Saleh was declared deceased. The other woman was taken to a specialized burn unit at a hospital, where she remained in critical condition as of late December.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office performed a preliminary autopsy on December 22, 2025. Officials confirmed that Saleh’s passing was due to smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, which are typical causes of death in residential fires. Her passing highlights the serious risks associated with swiftly spreading house fires, especially for elderly individuals who may have mobility challenges.

Investigators from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit, working alongside the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, are actively looking into the fire’s cause and origin. At this time, no official conclusions have been made public, and authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing. There has been no indication whether the fire was an accident or if it involved mechanical or electrical malfunctions.

DonnaLee Saleh was recognized by her neighbors as a long-standing member of the Spring Grove community. While there have not yet been any formal obituary announcements detailing her life, family, or memorial services, residents have voiced their grief and offered sympathy to her family. Neighbors described the occurrence as shocking and tragic, emphasizing that the usually peaceful Lotus Woods neighborhood seldom experiences such sorrowful events.

As the inquiry proceeds, fire officials are reminding residents about the vital importance of functioning smoke detectors, escape plans for fires, and regular home safety assessments, particularly in homes housing elderly individuals.

Updates will follow once investigators finalize their assessment and the family provides further information regarding memorial services.
