 HARDIN COUNTY, Texas — The community in Hardin County is grieving the death of Freeman Oliver Jones, 44, whose life was cut short in a tragic incident on Monday at his parents’ residence near Silsbee.



As per the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, the event took place around midday at a house on Jones Lane. Officials reported that Jones intruded by shattering the front door, issued threats to family members, and insisted on receiving money. After leaving the house for a short period, he returned with a steel pipe jack handle, maintaining an aggressive and threatening demeanor.

When Jones tried to enter the residence once more, a relative discharged a single round from a shotgun in order to safeguard those inside. Jones was declared dead at the scene, and Justice of the Peace Chris Ingram mandated an autopsy.

Sheriff Mark Davis noted that following the evaluation of evidence and testimonies from witnesses, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office concluded that the shooting was a justifiable and lawful use of force. In accordance with standard protocol, the case will be sent to Hardin County District Attorney Rebecca Walton for an official assessment.
