Frostburg State University Loss—Frostburg State University is grieving the unexpected and heartbreaking passing of a student who passed away on campus Thursday, an event that has profoundly impacted the university community during what is already a tense finals week. The student was discovered at Frederick Hall, a residence hall situated off Sand Spring Drive, leading to a rapid emergency response and a collective expression of sorrow from students, faculty, and staff.
University representatives indicated that emergency personnel were alerted without delay, and responders arrived promptly at the location. Unfortunately, despite their attempts to provide aid, the student was declared dead at Frederick Hall. In consideration of the family and loved ones, the identity of the student has not been disclosed, and officials have requested the community to respect the family's privacy in this challenging period.
“This is an immensely tragic event for our campus community,” stated Interim President Dr. Darlene Brannigan Smith in a message. “As we come together in mourning, I urge everyone to prioritize self-care and to be supportive of each other while seeking help during this trying time.” Her statement highlighted the emotional repercussions of the event and the necessity for kindness and communal support.
Further details regarding the situation that led to the student’s passing have not been shared by authorities. Michael Salvadge, the Chief of the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services EMS, confirmed that an ambulance was sent to Frederick Hall after receiving a report of an “obvious death.” No individual was taken from the location, which was later handed over to Frostburg State University Police for ongoing investigation. The call was received by the Allegany County 911 Center shortly after 6 p.m., showcasing the rapid action of local emergency teams.
Frederick Hall serves as a primary residence for numerous students, making the loss especially significant for those in close proximity. University officials mentioned that they are collaborating closely with student affairs, campus police, and upper administration to ensure that the matter is addressed with compassion, sensitivity, and respect for everyone involved.
In light of the tragedy, Frostburg State University has highlighted the availability of counseling and mental health support for students, faculty, and staff. Resources are being extended to anyone dealing with grief, anxiety, or emotional turmoil, acknowledging that events like this can heavily impact a closely-knit academic environment.
The timing of this loss has compounded its emotional impact, as final exams are occurring from December 10–12 and December 15–16, with graduation ceremonies set for December 17. University officials are urging students to focus on their mental well-being, support one another, and make use of campus resources while navigating both academic challenges and personal sorrow.
As the Frostburg State University community unites in their grief, the emphasis remains on healing, compassion, and solidarity. Officials are continuing their collaboration with law enforcement while commemorating the student’s memory and providing assistance to those most affected by this significant tragedy.
