The St. Edmund Preparatory High School community is grieving the tragic loss of Joseph “JR” Gavieres, a cherished member of the Class of 2016, who unexpectedly passed away on December 17, 2025, at just 27 years old. His premature exit has created a significant emptiness for his family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. We come together to support the Gavieres family in prayer and hope to honor his memory by celebrating the love and compassion he fostered in those around him.
Joseph was more than merely a student or graduate; he was a lively spirit whose essence impacted everyone in his vicinity. Those who were fortunate to know JR recall his friendliness, generosity, and steadfast kindness. Whether it was in academic settings, social gatherings, or moments of solitude, Joseph infused every exchange with joy, genuineness, and empathy. His dedication to his community, family, and friends was a testimony to his profound integrity that will always be remembered.
At St. Edmund Prep, Joseph was recognized not only as a committed student but also as a supportive friend who elevated everyone's spirits. His path from the corridors of St. Edmund to his post-graduation life showcased his bravery, aspirations, and loyalty to the people and principles he cherished. Joseph tackled each challenge with a mix of resolve and modesty, leaving a memorable impact on teachers, peers, and friends.
Although his time with us was tragically brief, Joseph’s influence lives on through the affection he exchanged and the numerous lives he enriched. In the future, his remembrance will continue to provide solace and motivation to the St. Edmund Prep community and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Services to pay tribute to Joseph’s life are set to take place at Marine Park Funeral Home in Brooklyn, NY, on Monday, December 22nd. The wake will occur from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a prayer service from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. During this period of sorrow, may all who cherished Joseph find solace in the memories of his life, and may his soul find eternal peace in God’s mercy.
Joseph “JR” Gavieres will be sorely missed, yet his essence and the happiness he shared with the world will endure in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Grant him eternal rest, O Lord, and let your everlasting light shine upon him.
