Blount County, Tennessee — The community in Blount County is in mourning over the tragic loss of Deputy Justin Mowery, who tragically passed away in a car accident while on duty during his patrol shift late on Sunday afternoon. His untimely passing has created a significant emotional gap for his family, fellow officers, and the many individuals whose lives he impacted throughout his career.
Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong has verified this devastating news and expressed his profound grief. “I am deeply saddened. This is a huge loss for his family, his colleagues, our agency, and the entire community,” noted Sheriff Berrong. He offered thanks to the Tennessee Highway Patrol for their quick response and pointed out that officials are collaborating to investigate the details of the accident. He also acknowledged the immediate support and assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies across the state.
At only 30 years old, Deputy Mowery’s dedication to public service and safety was clear throughout his professional life. Prior to his position at the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, he worked as a security officer at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Eager to serve and protect, he started his tenure with the BCSO in May 2020 and went through training at the BCSO Regional Training Academy, from which he graduated in October of that year as part of Class 021.
After completing his training, Deputy Mowery was assigned to work the evening shift as a patrol deputy. He quickly gained the admiration of his peers due to his professionalism, commitment, and teamwork. In December 2021, he fulfilled one of his professional aspirations by securing a prestigious position on the Sheriff’s SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, a duty he fulfilled with pride until his tragic death.
Deputy Mowery will be remembered as not only a brave law enforcement officer but also as a loyal coworker and a respected member of the Blount County community. His readiness to serve, even in perilous situations, embodies the highest values associated with the badge he wore.
As the community grieves, Sheriff Berrong requested ongoing prayers and support. “Please keep Deputy Mowery’s family in your thoughts and also pray for our deputies,” he requested.
Deputy Justin Mowery’s sacrifice will always be honored. His enduring legacy of service, bravery, and commitment will resonate in the hearts of those who were touched by him and within the community he dutifully served.
