Marvin Morales Death and Obituary – The Sacramento area is in mourning after a heartbreaking and troubling sequence of events that led to the passing of 40-year-old former sheriff’s deputy Marvin Morales on December 2, 2025. Morales, who had a background in local law enforcement, was shot and killed by police after a pursuit on Interstate 5. His death occurred shortly after he was identified as the primary suspect in the fatal stabbing of his 11-year-old son in Elk Grove—an occurrence that has deeply alarmed the community and raised concerns regarding Morales' troubling history.
The situation unfolded early in the day when police in Elk Grove received an emergency call from the mother of the children. She described shocking home security footage that showed Morales assaulting their 11-year-old son within their home. Officers acted quickly and found the boy with several stab wounds. Despite attempts to save him, he later passed away at the hospital. Additionally, Morales' 6-year-old daughter was located at the home, but she was physically unharmed.
By the time law enforcement arrived, Morales had already left the scene. Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper later saw his vehicle driving south on Interstate 5, leading to a pursuit that involved the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Elk Grove Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The chase escalated as Morales tried to escape arrest.
The CHP set up a spike strip close to the Highway 12 interchange, resulting in Morales’ vehicle crashing south of Lodi. After the crash, a confrontation ensued during which several law enforcement officers fired their weapons. Morales was hit, apprehended, and taken to a medical facility, where he was declared dead.
Investigators are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the officers discharging their firearms. Officials have not yet verified if Morales returned fire at the police during the incident. Significantly, investigators discovered that a gun safe in Morales’ residence was empty. No deputies or officers were injured during this incident.
Morales’ past with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reveals various warnings prior to the tragic events of December 2. In October 2023, Morales suffered a fentanyl overdose, mistakenly thinking he was using methamphetamine taken from an evidence case. He survived only because fellow officers administered Narcan.
After the overdose, an internal investigation uncovered that Morales had been dishonest about his drug use, mishandled evidence, and breached departmental protocols. Consequently, he was fired from the department in February 2024. He later voluntarily withdrew himself from future eligibility as a peace officer.
The passing of Morales—along with the heartbreaking loss of his young son—has left the Elk Grove and Sacramento communities in shock. Numerous residents are struggling with the horrifying nature of the incident, the safety of children, and apprehensions about the early warning signs in Morales’ background. As investigations proceed, officials are calling for understanding and support for the grieving family.
