With great sadness, the Lightman family announces the passing of Michael Allen Lightman, who quietly departed this life on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, in the company of his loved ones. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Michael's life was filled with vibrancy, kindness, and immense love for his family.

Raised in a tight-knit and forward-thinking family, Michael came to represent the finest qualities of living life to the fullest and loving wholeheartedly. He is survived by his dear wife of four decades, Joanie; his children Michael Jr. (Suzana), Adam (Madeleine), and Ainsley (Wriley Gillen); as well as his cherished grandchildren Sienna, Aidan, Lila, Beau, Emerson, and Gabriel. He is also fondly remembered by his brother Stephen Lightman (Sue), his sister Nancy Tashie (Jimmy), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, M.A. Lightman Jr. and Jean Lightman.

Michael’s enthusiasm for life was clear to all. He had a unique talent for making the most of every experience—whether it was enjoying tennis or golf, biking, hiking, or simply being outdoors with his loved ones.

As a pioneering real estate developer and esteemed businessman, Michael left a lasting legacy in the Memphis community. Encouraged by his father early on to delve into real estate, he launched his professional journey at Schumacher Mortgage Company before transitioning to brokerage and eventually development. In 1970, he established Michael Lightman Realty Co., initiating a long career that helped define the physical and economic environment of the area. His projects encompassed significant retail spaces, industrial centers, residential neighborhoods, and multi-family developments—endeavors that reflect his vision and determination. He also played a crucial role in the expansion of his family's business, Malco Theatres, helping it grow across six states. His contributions earned him many accolades, including a place in the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Hall of Fame.

Michael was equally passionate about the arts and his community involvement. He was a board member of Arts Memphis and The Orpheum, as well as a participant at Temple Israel. He valued his memberships at Ridgeway Country Club, Spring Creek Ranch, and the Racquet Club of Memphis and was a long-standing member of the Mystic Society of The Memphi and Carnival Memphis, where he served as King of Carnival in 2012.

Michael embraced a straightforward yet impactful philosophy: work diligently and enjoy life. This belief was something he imparted to his children and grandchildren—a guiding principle that will continue to influence them and everyone who knew him. His adventurous nature, generous soul, and steadfast dedication to his loved ones will keep inspiring those he leaves behind.

He will be profoundly missed and always remembered.

A service celebrating Michael’s life is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Sanctuary of Temple Israel, located at 1376 E. Massey Rd., followed by a reception.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family kindly requests that donations in Michael’s honor be directed to Carnival Children’s Charities or Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
