My heart is heavy with the news regarding the death of Mike Thorman from Moline, Illinois. The departure of someone so sincere, charitable, and firmly embedded in his community creates a profound void that language struggles to express. Mike was the sort of individual whose existence inspired feelings of support, encouragement, and recognition in others. He devoted so much of himself to the individuals and interests he valued, and that legacy will persist in the numerous lives he impacted.
For countless people, Mike represented a reliable and compassionate companion. To families like ours, he was a constant presence—always there. He never wavered in his encouragement of my son, whether it was by rooting for him in baseball or sharing in his enthusiasm for racing. While those moments of support may have appeared trivial to Mike, they were invaluable to a young person discovering confidence and happiness. That encapsulated who Mike was: an individual who uplifted others merely through his genuine nature.
Mike’s commitment went well beyond just family and friends. As a certified Storm Spotter with the National Weather Service and an active Skywarn volunteer, he dedicated his time and expertise to safeguard others. Such actions perfectly illustrate his character—consistently looking out for his community's safety without seeking any reward. Even after retiring, Mike remained a dependable figure, exemplifying the fact that one's sense of purpose doesn’t cease with the end of a career.
As a proud alumnus of Davenport West High School, Mike carried his origins into every aspect of his life. Above everything else, he was a loving husband to his cherished wife, Julie Thorman. Their relationship stood as a proof of love, camaraderie, and mutual resilience, and our hearts especially reach out to Julie and the entire Thorman family during this profoundly challenging period.
Although our hearts are deeply saddened, we find solace in the thought that Mike has reunited with God, achieving tranquility after a fulfilling life.
