Rosemary Barber Mapleton, Iowa Incident – A tragic vehicular accident took place on Christmas night, December 25, 2025, resulting in the death of 75-year-old Rosemary Barber, a resident of Mapleton, in rural Monona County. Initial reports were unclear and suggested the involvement of a motorcycle; however, official statements from law enforcement have clarified that the accident involved an SUV and a pickup truck, ruling out any motorcycle participation.
As reported by officials, the accident transpired around 7:40 to 7:41 p.m. at the junction of 130th Street and Walnut Avenue, situated roughly five miles east of Mapleton. The Iowa State Patrol indicated that Barber was operating a 2013 Ford Escape SUV eastward on 130th Street when the incident occurred.
Investigations revealed that Barber was attempting a U-turn on 130th Street to head back west. During this maneuver, her SUV collided with a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck, which was also proceeding eastbound, striking the driver's side. The collision was intense, leading to significant destruction of the Ford Escape and causing life-threatening injuries to Barber.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. Barber was taken to Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, for treatment of her severe injuries. Unfortunately, despite medical attention, she later passed away due to her injuries. Authorities confirmed her passing later that night.
The driver of the GMC Sierra was identified as 31-year-old Cody Clausen from Schleswig, Iowa. There was also a passenger in the pickup vehicle during the crash. Both Clausen and his passenger were assessed at the site and did not appear to have sustained major injuries.
Officials indicated that thick fog and poor visibility were likely contributing factors in the accident. Weather conditions on Christmas night in the area substantially decreased visibility, complicating the drivers' ability to see clearly. While no legal actions have been taken as of yet, the Iowa State Patrol has remarked that environmental conditions were influential in the sequence of events.
The investigation is being conducted by the Iowa State Patrol with support from the Monona County Sheriff's Office, Crawford County Sheriff's Office, and the Mapleton Fire Department. Authorities are continuing to examine evidence, which includes road conditions and the positioning of the vehicles, to finalize the official accident report.
The passing of Rosemary Barber has cast a shadow over the Mapleton community, particularly during this festive season. Local officials have utilized this tragic event as a reminder for drivers to be extremely cautious in conditions of low visibility, particularly on rural roads where lighting is poor and traffic patterns can shift suddenly.
