The Greenville community is expressing deep sorrow over the tragic and heartbreaking passing of Susan Harrison, a devoted mother whose existence became forever linked to tragedy following the murder of her son, Jayden Harrison, in 2023. On Sunday, over two years after Jayden was fatally shot outside the Planet Fitness on Thomas Langston Road, Susan was discovered deceased in the same parking lot—close to the location where her son had lost his life. Officials have indicated that her death seems to be a suicide, a somber conclusion to a lengthy and painful ordeal characterized by sorrow, resilience, and unmatched love.
Susan Harrison was not merely a grieving mother; she was a relentless advocate who was determined to keep Jayden’s memory alive. Following his death, she spearheaded an unyielding campaign to attain justice—establishing a memorial at the site of his death, initiating community awareness activities, creating a website, putting up yard signs and billboards, maintaining an active social media presence, and generating funds to offer a reward for information. Her voice served as a persistent demand for truth, responsibility, and remembrance. Law enforcement recognized that her contributions were essential in keeping the case visible to the public until an arrest occurred in March 2024.
Susan’s resolve illustrated the depth of her affection. She openly carried her sorrow to ensure her son’s narrative would not be overlooked.
In addition to her advocacy, Susan was a respected registered nurse case manager and an alumnus of Pitt Community College. She was recognized for her empathy, professionalism, and commitment to assisting others during challenging phases of their lives. Those who were acquainted with her depicted her as a woman of strength and compassion—someone who selflessly offered herself, even while enduring unimaginable heartache.
Jayden Harrison’s life and legacy were central to Susan’s existence. A graduate of J.H. Rose High School, a former student at East Carolina University, and a member of Sigma Tau Gamma, Jayden was remembered for his vibrant interests and cheerful demeanor—his affection for Lego and Star Wars, his enthusiasm for gaming, and his talent for trivia. Susan dedicated herself to ensuring that Jayden would be remembered not solely for his tragic end but for the person he was.
Flowers now rest near the memorial Susan established, serving as a quiet symbol of a mother’s love and a community’s mourning. Her passing creates a significant void for family, friends, and all who witnessed her brave pursuit of justice. Yet her legacy continues—in the awareness she fostered, the kindness she displayed, and the reminder that behind each news story is a family forever transformed.
As we reflect on Susan Harrison, we commemorate her resilience, her advocacy, and the immense love she held for her son. She should be remembered for her bravery and her compassionate nature, and may Jayden’s memory continue to illuminate the lives they impacted. Our heartfelt condolences extend to their family and loved ones during this period of overwhelming grief.
