The Wasatch Academy community is in mourning following a tragic accident on Friday night in Ephraim, Utah, which involved a pickup truck colliding with two school buses filled with students.
The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 8 near mile marker 268. According to Utah State Troopers, a 43-year-old driver of the pickup truck crossed over the center line and collided with two buses heading north.
The first bus, containing 19 students, was sideswiped, and there were no reported injuries. The second bus, which was carrying 17 students and a faculty member as the driver, was struck head-on.
Eighteen individuals aboard the second bus were transported to medical facilities with injuries. Two of the students were critically injured and taken by air to hospitals, while the rest sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. The pickup truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials from Wasatch Academy informed families early Saturday morning and confirmed that both buses were operated by faculty members. According to the most recent information, two students and one faculty member are still hospitalized, while the others have been able to return to campus.
