Wasatch Academy Bus Incident Close to Ephraim, Utah Results in One Fatality and Eighteen Injured

 A heartbreaking motor vehicle accident involving two school buses from Wasatch Academy and a pickup truck took place on the evening of December 12, 2025, along U.S. Route 89, situated between Ephraim and Mt. Pleasant in Utah. This crash led to the death of the driver of the pickup truck and caused injuries to 18 individuals, the majority of whom were students returning from a school-related event. The incident has profoundly impacted the Wasatch Academy community and nearby towns, sparking an outpouring of compassion and introspection.

As per initial reports from officials, the accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when both school buses were driving north on the highway. The pickup truck, operated by a 43-year-old man whose name has not been disclosed, was traveling south and veered into oncoming traffic. Investigators with the Utah Highway Patrol suspect that driving while fatigued may have led to the driver losing control.

The pickup truck first made contact with the front of the leading Wasatch Academy bus, which had 19 students onboard. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the bus passengers or its driver. However, shortly afterward, the truck crashed head-on into the second bus, resulting in much more severe consequences. Emergency personnel arrived promptly, and the scene was described as chaotic, with students and staff trying to aid each other as they awaited professional assistance.

The pickup truck driver was confirmed deceased at the scene. On the second bus, all 17 student passengers along with the faculty driver acquired injuries of differing degrees and were taken to local hospitals for assessment and treatment. Two individuals were transported via medical helicopter in critical condition, highlighting the seriousness of the crash. The other injured students and the driver received treatment primarily for minor to moderate injuries, with the majority being able to return to campus later that night or on the next day.

Following the incident, Wasatch Academy, a college-preparatory boarding institution in Mt. Pleasant, acted quickly to provide support for its students and staff members. Counseling and emotional assistance services were offered, recognizing the event's traumatic impact. School leaders announced that the final exams set for the following week would be delayed, allowing students the time needed to recuperate physically and emotionally.

The next day, students convened in a supportive environment to discuss the event, share their stories, and collectively process their trauma. One parent remarked on how several students with emergency medical training were instrumental right after the accident, helping maintain calm among their classmates and providing aid until professional responders arrived. Their actions were widely acknowledged as a reflection of the school's culture of responsibility and compassion.
