It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the death of Wayne McElveen, who formerly held the position of Calcasieu Parish Sheriff and served as Ward Three City Marshal. He passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Wayne committed his life to serving the public and the residents of Lake Charles and neighboring areas, creating a legacy characterized by integrity, compassion, and strong leadership.
Wayne's law enforcement career stretched over many years. He was the Ward Three City Marshal from 1972 until 1980, subsequently becoming the Sheriff of Calcasieu Parish from 1980 until 2000. During his time in office, he garnered great respect for his unwavering dedication to justice, community security, and the welfare of his deputies and associates. Earlier this year, in recognition of his important contributions, the Calcasieu Sheriff’s Prison was renamed to honor him as the Sheriff Wayne McElveen Prison, reflecting the lasting influence of his direction.
Sheriff Stitch Guillory, who collaborated with Wayne in the early days of his career in law enforcement, spoke about his passing, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Sheriff Wayne McElveen. His genuine concern for our community and his staff was evident in all his actions. His service and legacy will always be integral to Calcasieu Parish.”
Wayne was recognized not just for his achievements in his profession but also for his sincere kindness and compassionate nature. He provided advice and mentorship to numerous officers throughout the years, significantly influencing the future of law enforcement in the area. The funeral services for Wayne McElveen will take place at 2 p.m. on December 13 at the North Venue of Trinity Baptist Church, with visitation occurring the previous day from 4 to 8 p.m. at the same venue. Friends, family, colleagues, and members of the community are welcome to commemorate his life and legacy.
Wayne McElveen is survived by his dear ones and a thankful community that will keep his memory alive. His commitment, leadership, and spirit of service will be remembered, and his contributions to Calcasieu Parish will echo for many years to come.
