Andrew Otero from Dundalk MD Passed Away: Severn School Mathematics Instructor Died in a Tragic Incident

 The Severn School community in Severna Park is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Andrew Otero, a former teacher of mathematics whose influence on students, colleagues, and the wider school community was significant and lasting.

Hailing from Bristol, Connecticut, Otero committed his life to service, education, and guidance. He was a proud first-generation member of the military, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 2009 at 17 years old. Over the course of five years in service, he was based in Washington, D.C., where he worked closely with the White House during the Obama administration—an experience that highlighted his dedication and commitment to public service.

After completing his military service, Otero achieved another milestone as a first-generation college graduate. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Towson University, laying the groundwork for a career characterized by intellectual rigor, curiosity, and enthusiasm for teaching. He subsequently settled in Dundalk, Maryland.

Within the Severn School, Otero was much more than just a mathematics instructor. He taught some of the school’s most complex and rewarding classes, such as AP Computer Science Principles and AP Calculus AB—subjects he was passionate about and made engaging for his students. His classroom was recognized as a space of high expectations combined with support, where students were encouraged to think critically while receiving individual support.

Outside the classroom, Otero took on many leadership and mentorship responsibilities. He served as the Grade Dean for the Class of 2025, becoming a trusted advisor during the critical formative years of his students. He also advised United Spectrum, the school's gender and sexuality alliance, alongside the Severn Service Society, which assists both the school community and the larger Annapolis area. His dedication to equity and inclusion was additionally illustrated by his role as Upper School DEIB Coordinator.

Otero’s commitment also extended into sports and school leadership. He took on the role of Head Coach for Track & Field, guiding student-athletes with the same dedication and discipline he applied to his academic responsibilities. He was further involved in the school’s Steering Committee and co-chaired the finance component of Severn School’s accreditation process, thoughtfully contributing to the school’s long-term strategies and sustainability.

Above all, Andrew Otero was a cherished father, a steadfast friend, and a respected coach and educator. Those who were fortunate to know him recall his integrity, his eagerness to help others, and his skill in connecting with individuals from various backgrounds and roles. His life exemplified a unique blend of service, leadership, and compassion.

The passing of Andrew Otero is being profoundly felt throughout the Severn School community and beyond. As students, colleagues, friends, and family mourn his loss, they also celebrate a legacy marked by dedication, bravery, and unwavering belief in the potential of others.
