 Austin, Texas — The Austin community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Isaiah Atkinson, who was tragically shot during a New Year’s Eve celebration in North Austin. Isaiah’s passing signifies the city’s first homicide of 2026 and has left his friends, family, and neighbors grappling with the abrupt and irrational loss.

The Austin Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to a commercial area on West Anderson Lane close to North Lamar Boulevard at approximately 1:30 a.m. on January 1, 2026, after receiving calls about a young man who had sustained a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, authorities found Isaiah, who had been struck in the chest amid an altercation at the gathering. Emergency personnel promptly initiated CPR, but Isaiah was declared dead at 1:45 a.m.

Authorities suspect that a solitary assailant is responsible for the shooting and remains at large. The police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying any witnesses or suspects and are encouraging anyone who might have video, either from security cameras, mobile devices, or social media related to the events preceding, during, or following the shooting to step forward.
