Near the 256.4 mile-marker in the northbound lanes, just north of 61st Avenue, the collision happened about 1:50 a.m. Early inquiries show a silver 2022 Toyota was going south in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a black 2016 Ford going properly northbound.

Local fire authorities had to rescue the Toyota driver, identified as 29-year-old Jessica Hughes of Hebron, Indiana. She was flown to a Chicago hospital because of the extent of her wounds. Troopers pointed signs indicating Hughes might have been disabled at the time of the collision. Her state remains serious.

The Ford's driver, 20-year-old Rylee Hanson of Hobart, Indiana, formerly from Demotte, Indiana, was declared dead at the site by the Lake County Coroner. One of the Ford's female passengers sustained major injuries and was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital for medical care in an ambulance.

To enable a medical helicopter landing and crash inquiry, both northbound and southbound lanes of I-65 were briefly shut. Lanes have now been opened once more.

At this point there are no filed counts. Further review and consultation with the Lake County Prosecutor's Office will guide the continuing probe. Troopers at 219-696-6242 are looking for anybody with dash-cam video of the crash or the automobiles before to the event.

Until demonstrated otherwise, all suspects are assumed innocent. The Lowell Post of the Indiana State Police gave the update.
