Anthony “Tony” Tuczynski Remembered for a Lifetime of Teaching, Service and Family

 The Catskill community is remembering Anthony “Tony” Tuczynski, a longtime educator, Army veteran, husband, father, grandfather, and community volunteer whose life was shaped by service and devotion to others. Tony, of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and formerly of Athens and Catskill, New York, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, at 82, just days before his 83rd birthday. His journey from a Hudson County-area farm to a decades-long career in education reflects a life filled with responsibility, faith, family, and meaningful connections.

Born August 29, 1943, in Hudson, New York, Tony grew up in Schodack Landing as the eldest of five brothers. His early years on the family farm helped shape the strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that remained evident throughout his life. After graduating from Niagara University, he served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War before continuing his education at Russell Sage College, where he earned a master’s degree. His education and military experience became important foundations for the years of service that followed.

Tony devoted more than three decades to education, with much of his teaching career spent at Grandview Elementary School. For generations of students, he was more than an educator who taught lessons from a curriculum. His influence extended through the encouragement, guidance, and everyday relationships that can shape a child’s experience at school. His commitment to young people continued outside the classroom, including his involvement with the CYO basketball league and his work teaching CCD at St. Patrick’s Church.

Community service remained another important part of Tony’s life. He served on the Parish Council and remained involved in activities that connected families, faith, and local life. He also took great pride in attending his children’s activities and supporting them as they grew. After retiring in 2002, Tony embraced a new chapter that included skiing, golfing, traveling, home renovation projects, and time with friends. His interests reflected a man who remained active and curious while making room for the people and activities he enjoyed.

Family, however, stood at the center of Tony’s life. He shared 56 years of marriage with Patricia “Patty” Tuczynski and raised four children: Amy, Timothy, Jonathan, and Jill. His seven grandchildren—Scarlett, Lucas, Jamie, Mya, Ellie, Raeya, and Mari—were a cherished part of his later years. He also leaves behind brothers Daniel and Roger, along with nieces, nephews, and extended relatives. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Thomas, and younger brother Kenneth.

Friends and community members will have an opportunity to honor Tony during calling hours Friday, August 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home in Catskill. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Columbia and Greene Counties, offering another way for those who knew him to honor his commitment to helping others.

Tony Tuczynski leaves behind a legacy that reaches across classrooms, military service, parish life, community activities, friendships, and family traditions. His more than 30 years as an educator gave him the opportunity to influence generations of children, while his faith and volunteer work strengthened his connection to the Catskill community. Most of all, he leaves the family he loved, including his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, and extended relatives. The memories they carry forward will ensure that Tony is remembered not simply for the length of his life, but for the many ways he gave his time, knowledge, humor, and heart to others.
