Lainey Scroggs’ Bright Legacy Lives On as Bedford Community Honors Beloved 13-Year-Old

 Lainey Mae Scroggs brought an extraordinary sense of joy to the people around her during her 13 years of life. She passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, surrounded by family in Temperance, Michigan, leaving behind parents, a sister, relatives, classmates, teammates, and friends who will carry her memory forward. Known for her bright personality, determination, humor, and kindness, Lainey had a way of making ordinary moments memorable. Her family and community are now remembering a young girl whose presence brought light into countless lives.

Born June 12, 2013, to William “Billy” and Sarah Scroggs, Lainey was a dedicated student who consistently earned all A’s. She was preparing to begin eighth grade at Bedford Junior High School in September, with another school year and new experiences ahead. Her academic commitment reflected the determination she showed in other areas of her life. For her family and teachers, her achievements were part of a much larger picture of a young person who approached challenges with enthusiasm and refused to give up easily.

Cheerleading was among Lainey’s greatest passions. She participated in both sideline and competitive cheer and particularly enjoyed being a flyer. Her determination pushed her to develop new tumbling abilities and master increasingly challenging stunts. Cheer was more than an activity for Lainey; it gave her a place to challenge herself, work alongside teammates, and celebrate accomplishments. Her connection to the sport was also deeply personal because her mother, Sarah, coached sideline cheer during years that became important memories for both of them.

Family relationships were at the center of Lainey’s world. She shared a special bond with her mother and a close, playful relationship with her father. She also looked up to her older sister, Kenna, whose presence was an important part of her life. Those relationships helped shape the memories her loved ones will treasure. She leaves behind her parents, sister, grandparents, extended relatives, friends, classmates, and cheer teammates, each carrying different memories of the young woman she was becoming. Visitation is scheduled for August 16, followed by her Celebration of Life on August 17. A Bedford Community Memorial Service is planned for August 18, giving the wider community opportunities to come together, support her loved ones, and honor the life she shared with so many.
