Selkirk Mourns Joel Matheson, Honoring a Life Defined by Family, Strength, and Remarkable Perseverance

 The Selkirk community is remembering Joel Matheson, a devoted husband, father, and man whose determination through years of serious illness left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Joel died at 36 after a long and difficult medical journey that began with an MDS diagnosis in 2024. His story was marked by perseverance, family devotion, and an extraordinary willingness to keep moving forward even when the road became increasingly difficult.

Joel’s experience with cancer included months of demanding treatment, including blood transfusions, chemotherapy, radiation, and a stem cell transplant. Reaching remission gave Joel, his wife Jenny, and their young daughter Katie renewed hope for the future. That period allowed the family to look ahead with optimism and imagine returning to a more familiar routine. For Joel, the opportunity to continue building memories with Jenny and Katie remained one of the most meaningful reasons to keep going.

That hope was tested again in early 2026 when persistent back pain and numbness in Joel’s legs led to further medical evaluation. Doctors discovered a fracture involving his T8 vertebra, and surgery revealed a mass pressing against his spine. The mass was identified as myeloid sarcoma, while additional testing showed that his MDS had returned. Joel once again faced intensive treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation, while recovering from major spinal surgery.

His illness eventually progressed to acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer. Despite repeated hospitalizations and difficult treatments, Joel continued to face each stage with determination. His doctors ultimately explained that the leukemia was progressing and that additional treatment could no longer stop the disease. At that point, Joel entered end-of-life care, surrounded by the people whose love had remained constant throughout his journey.

Those who knew Joel remembered qualities that reached far beyond his medical experience. He was described as kind, intelligent, patient, thoughtful, and deeply positive. Even while confronting circumstances that would have overwhelmed many people, he continued to show compassion toward others. His ability to maintain warmth and consideration during his own most difficult moments became an important part of the way friends and family remember him.

For Jenny and Katie, Joel’s passing creates an enormous absence within the family they built together. The memories of their life as a family will now carry special meaning, from ordinary days at home to the difficult milestones they faced during his illness. Friends, relatives, and community members are being encouraged to stand beside them with compassion and practical support.
