Amanda Wertman and Michaela: Mother and Daughter Remembered After Devastating Pike County Collision

Amanda Wertman, 41, of Winslow, Indiana, and her 8-year-old daughter, Michaela, are being remembered after their lives ended in a devastating collision on State Road 64. The mother and daughter were among those involved in a sequence that began with a sheriff’s deputy responding to a domestic violence call near the Country Junction gas station. Their deaths have left relatives, friends and neighbors facing a painful goodbye in 2026.

According to Indiana State Police, the events began around 7:42 p.m. when a Pike County deputy headed with emergency lights and siren activated. A Toyota Camry believed to be connected to the call left the area and traveled east on State Road 64. Investigators said the Camry forced another motorist off the roadway, failed to stop at a flashing red signal and crossed into the deputy’s lane, prompting the deputy to turn around and pursue it.

The pursuit continued toward County Road 900 East, where police said the Camry crossed the centerline and struck a Toyota Sienna head-on. Amanda was driving the Sienna, which carried four children. Amanda and the Camry driver died at the scene, while Michaela was taken to a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital with injuries and later died. The identity of the other driver had not been released. The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is examining the sequence leading to the collision.

The other children in Amanda’s Sienna survived but were hospitalized. Authorities said three were expected to recover, although families have shared updates as the children receive medical care. One of those injured was Amanda’s 5-year-old son, Theodore.
