Michael D. Durkin, 16, of Chesterton, Indiana, died Monday, September 28, 2026, leaving family, classmates, friends and others in the community mourning a young life remembered for intelligence, confidence and a strong personality. Born May 29, 2010, in Crown Point, Michael was the son of Michael and Nicole Durkin. He was a junior at Chesterton High School, where he took part in the debate team and enjoyed expressing his ideas, and engaging in spirited discussions. His obituary presents a picture of a teenager whose curiosity and individuality were central to how loved ones remember him.
Beyond school, Michael worked at Dairy Queen and spent time gaming with friends. Minecraft was among the games he enjoyed, while Grounded and War Thunder reflected his interest in survival-oriented challenges and tactical play. Those familiar interests were part of the everyday presence friends and classmates will remember.
Michael also developed a strong interest in Japanese culture and anime, including the long-running One Piece series. He had been learning Japanese, an effort that reflected his curiosity. His family remembered this curiosity as one of the qualities that helped make him distinctive. Alongside his academic interests and hobbies, Michael shared a close bond with his chocolate Labrador, Nala, who was described as a loyal companion and an important presence in his life.
Michael is survived by his parents, Michael and Nicole Durkin; his sister, Isabel Durkin; and his great-grandmother, Alice J. Allen. His surviving family also includes grandfathers David W. Turnipseed and Michael G. Durkin; aunts and uncles John and Kimberly Tancos and Eric and Amanda Carpenter; cousins Gabriel Carpenter, McKenzie Carpenter, Easton Tancos and Vincent Tancos; as well as extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Diana Turnipseed and Michele Durkin.
Friends and relatives can pay their respects during visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road in Valparaiso. A funeral service is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Pastor Charlotte Kroft officiating. Private entombment will take place at Graceland Cemetery. The family has requested memorial contributions in place of flowers to the Porter County Suicide Prevention and Awareness Task Force or the Alzheimer’s Association.
At 16, Michael’s death has left classmates and friends confronting the loss of someone who was still in the middle of adolescence and high school life. His involvement with debate, work at Dairy Queen, gaming interests, enthusiasm for anime and Japanese culture, and affection for Nala offer personal details about his life. They provide reminders of the routines, relationships and interests that made up his life and shaped the memories he leaves with others.
The circumstances or cause of Michael’s death were not provided in the information available, and no conclusion should be drawn from the organizations named for memorial donations. What is clear is that his family is grieving a son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, nephew and cousin, while his classmates and friends are remembering a distinctive young person. Michael Durkin’s life was brief, but the details shared by those closest to him show a teenager with strong interests, an active mind and meaningful relationships. His family and community will carry those memories forward as they gather to honor him this week. His memory will remain with those closest.
