Three young men from Hammond, Slidell and New Orleans died after a single-vehicle crash in Tangipahoa Parish early Monday, September 28, 2026. Louisiana State Police said the collision occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 55 on-ramp from U.S. Highway 51 near Ponchatoula. A 2017 Honda Accord was traveling north on U.S. 51 when it left the roadway and struck a concrete support column beneath the elevated portion of I-55.
The three occupants were males ages 21, 20 and 19, according to State Police. Their names had not been publicly released in the latest official report, and reports circulating online naming the victims should not be treated as confirmed without official or family identification. The 21-year-old driver and 20-year-old front-seat passenger died at the crash scene. The 19-year-old rear-seat passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
State Police reported that the driver and rear-seat passenger were properly restrained, while the front-seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt. Authorities have not publicly established why the Honda left the roadway. The official account states that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and that the reason it departed the roadway remains under investigation. Investigators have not yet released a final explanation for the collision.
The crash occurred at an interchange where the roadway passes beneath elevated interstate infrastructure, leaving investigators to examine the scene and reconstruct what happened. Routine toxicology samples were collected, Louisiana State Police said, as part of the investigation. The collection of those samples does not by itself establish that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. Additional findings will be needed before authorities can determine the factors involved.
The deaths have brought grief to three communities connected to the victims. State Police identified their hometowns as Hammond, Slidell and New Orleans, but did not publicly assign a specific hometown to each victim in the latest release. Because the victims' names and individual identities had not been officially announced, details about their families, education, work, interests or personal lives remain unavailable for responsible reporting. Their absence will be felt in households and friendships, even as officials work to establish more details.
At 19, 20 and 21, the three young men were at ages when many people are beginning adult lives, strengthening friendships, pursuing education or work and making plans for the years ahead. Their deaths represent three immediate losses and the loss of futures their families and friends may have imagined with them. For those who knew the victims, memories of ordinary moments and shared experiences will now carry added significance as they face the reality of an unexpected loss. Those memories may become an important source of comfort for people confronting an absence they did not expect.
Louisiana State Police continue to investigate and have not released a final account of what caused the Honda Accord to leave U.S. 51. The names Brian, Tyrell Yates and Carmelo were reportedly circulating online but were not included in the latest State Police release and remain unconfirmed. For families and friends in Hammond, Slidell and New Orleans, the days ahead will bring grief as they remember three young lives lost in the same tragic event. Additional findings may clarify circumstances as investigators work to establish the facts.
