Yoketha Brown, known to those close to her as “Ketha Key,” died after sustaining critical injuries in a wrong-way crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago on Sunday night, September 27. Brown was driving a white sedan when a black SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck her vehicle head-on. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she later died from injuries sustained in the collision. Her death has left family, friends and others who knew her mourning a woman remembered for serving others through her medical career.
Chicago police said the crash happened at about 11:20 p.m. in the 4000 block of DuSable Lake Shore Drive near the Oakwood Boulevard exit. The black SUV entered the northbound lanes while traveling in the wrong direction before colliding with Brown’s sedan. A black coupe was also involved in the resulting chain-reaction crash. The circumstances that led the SUV driver to enter the opposing lanes have not been publicly explained, leaving investigators to determine what happened before the impact.
Brown was critically injured and transported for emergency treatment, but her injuries proved fatal. Police said the driver of the black SUV was not injured and was taken into custody at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Authorities have not announced potential charges, a court date or other details about the legal status of the SUV driver. Those details could depend on findings from the ongoing investigation and any decisions made by prosecutors.
The collision also affected Chicago commuters beyond the immediate crash site. Several lanes were blocked for several hours while investigators worked, and the roadway in the affected area remained closed until about 8:30 a.m. Monday. Some Chicago Transit Authority buses were also rerouted because of the crash and related closures. The extended closure reflected the work required to document the scene.
For Brown’s family, the focus has shifted from the crash to understanding why it happened and remembering the person they lost. The family is seeking additional information about the circumstances and has called publicly for answers from authorities. Relatives have also raised concerns about lighting along DuSable Lake Shore Drive, saying improved visibility could help address safety concerns in the area along the route. Those concerns reflect the family’s perspective and have not been established by authorities as a cause of the collision.
Brown’s professional life forms an important part of how her family remembers her. She was described as a medical professional who dedicated her life to helping and serving others. Public details about her career and specific medical role were not provided, so those aspects should be understood through what her family has shared. The description nonetheless points to a life in which caring for other people was an important part of her identity and sense of purpose.
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit is continuing to examine the crash. Investigators are working to establish the sequence of events, including how the SUV came to be traveling in the northbound lanes and what occurred during the chain-reaction collision. Until that work is complete, questions about the crash remain unanswered. They are left to remember Ketha Key for her dedication to medicine, her service to others and the place she held in her Chicago community and beyond.
