Sharon K. Sayre, 79, of Athens, Ohio, died Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at her residence, leaving family and friends to remember a life marked by dedication, creativity and family ties. Born June 16, 1947, in Athens County, Sharon was the daughter of the late Donald and Lovella “Sue” Koon Cook. Her death closes a life rooted in the Athens area, where she built lasting relationships and contributed through her work and family life.
Sharon’s educational years included her time at Buchtel York, where she graduated with the Class of 1965 and earned the distinction of salutatorian. Her academic achievement was followed by a professional career. She devoted 42 years to McBee’s before retiring, a period of service that became important to her life story. For those who knew her through work, that history represents years of consistency and commitment, while her family remembers the person behind those years of professional dedication.
Away from work, Sharon found happiness in ordinary activities and time spent with people she loved. She enjoyed shopping with her mother and aunts, experiences that reflected the close family relationships she valued. She also spent time making clothes and creating crafts, pursuits that gave her opportunities to work with her hands and express her creativity. These interests offer a glimpse into a life where meaningful moments were found in familiar routines, family companionship and creative projects.
Among Sharon’s most treasured relationships was the one she shared with her grandson, Seth Sayre of Amanda, Ohio. Time with him was described as one of her greatest joys, underscoring how important family remained throughout her life. She is also survived by her sons, Michael Sayre and his wife, Kristin, of Athens, and Steven Sayre of Jacksonville. Together with her grandson, they carry the memories of a mother and grandmother whose life was closely connected to the people she loved.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Larry Sayre, and her brother, Ronnie Cook. She was preceded in death by her beloved aunts Eileen Koon, Dorothy Koon, Ruth Koon and Kate Koon. The list reflects the generations of family members who came before her and the relationships that formed part of her life. For those now mourning Sharon, remembering those family connections may also bring back stories and shared experiences that remain meaningful.
Friends and relatives will have an opportunity to gather in the days following Sharon’s death. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Chapel in Glouster-Bishopville. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Monday, October 5, at the same chapel, with Jon Hanning officiating. Interment is scheduled at Maplewood Cemetery in Glouster. The services will provide a setting for loved ones to offer condolences, share memories and say farewell.
Sharon K. Sayre leaves behind a family that will remember her through the many parts of her life: her academic accomplishments, 42 years of work, creative interests and, most importantly, the relationships she cherished. Her sons, grandson and extended family will carry memories of the moments that made her life distinctive. As relatives and friends gather for her services, they will honor a woman whose years were shaped by commitment, family and simple pleasures. Her memory will remain part of the lives of those who knew and loved her.
