LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY — Ian Michael Brandewie, 34, of Lexington, Kentucky, died on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, leaving family members, friends, fellow veterans, and loved ones mourning his loss. Remembered for his courage, creativity, compassion, and dedication to helping others, Ian lived a life shaped by military service, artistic expression, adventure, and a desire to make a difference. His family and friends are honoring the many ways he touched their lives.
Born on October 16, 1991, Ian grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Wilmore, Kentucky. From an early age, he dreamed of becoming a United States Navy SEAL and pursued that goal with determination. He enlisted in the Navy in 2012 and completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training Class 301. He subsequently served with SEAL Team 8, completing multiple deployments to Central America and East Africa during the Global War on Terrorism. He concluded his military career in 2018 as a Special Warfare Operator Second Class.
After leaving the Navy, Ian continued exploring his interests through creative work and education. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky, developing skills in sculpture, metalworking, and poetry. Music was another important part of his life. He enjoyed singing, playing guitar and drums, and creating spontaneous musical moments with family and friends. His artistic pursuits reflected a personality that reached beyond his military background, embracing expression, imagination, and shared experiences.
Ian’s adventurous spirit also took him around the world. He enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, kayaking, mountain climbing, and traveling through Europe while working on tour with Metallica. These interests reflected his enthusiasm for new experiences and the outdoors. Whether pursuing physical challenges, discovering unfamiliar places, or sharing music with others, he embraced opportunities to explore. The combination of adventure and creativity formed a distinctive part of the life his loved ones are remembering.
Helping others was equally important to Ian. He advocated for veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health challenges, offering support to a community with which he shared military experience. He also volunteered at animal shelters, supported residents at Rose Terrace Personal Care Home, and taught rock climbing to children living with cancer. These activities demonstrated his commitment to people facing difficult circumstances. His service continued after his military career, expressed through practical acts of kindness and efforts to improve others’ lives.
Above all, Ian was a devoted husband, loving son, cherished brother and uncle, and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his parents and stepparents; his sister, Caitlin, and her family; his grandparents; stepsiblings; and extended relatives. Those mourning him are remembering not only his military achievements and artistic gifts but also the personal relationships that gave his life meaning. His death leaves loved ones grieving someone whose interests and generosity reached across many communities.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church, 1991 Phillips Road, Nicholasville, Kentucky. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., with military honors and burial at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the SEAL Future Foundation or Rose Terrace Personal Care Home. As family, friends, and fellow veterans gather to honor Ian, they will remember his courage, creativity, and compassion. May his legacy continue through the lives he touched.
