Gerard Broeker, 56, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Effingham, died Sunday, September 27, 2026, at his home in Springfield. Born July 27, 1970, in Effingham, Broeker built a professional life around helping others, particularly people who were underprivileged and underserved. His work with the Statewide Independent Living Council of Illinois and later with Human Services reflected a longstanding commitment to serving people with disabilities and those seeking support.
Broeker was the son of Robert Broeker and Maureen Imming Broeker. He graduated from Quincy College with a degree in Communications in 1994 before earning his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois in 1999. His education provided the foundation for a career that combined communication, legal knowledge, and public service. Rather than focusing solely on professional advancement, Broeker directed much of his working life toward helping people navigate challenges and access needed support.
His work with the Statewide Independent Living Council of Illinois became an important part of his professional legacy. He later worked for Human Services on disability claims, continuing his connection to people who needed assistance. His family’s account emphasizes his passion for helping those who were underprivileged and underserved. That commitment shaped the way he was remembered and remains one of the clearest themes in accounts of his life.
Broeker was also connected to his faith and community. He was a longtime member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Springfield and remained supportive of the University of Illinois as an alumnus. Outside his professional and religious life, he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. One especially memorable experience came when he had the opportunity to announce a game alongside legendary broadcaster Jack Buck, creating a lasting connection between his love of baseball and an important moment in his life.
His family was extensive and central to his life. Broeker is survived by his father, Robert; siblings Roberta Meyer, Theresa Griffin, Jon Broeker, Monica Feldhake, Jeannine Lehman, Anne Miller, Kristen Rodgers, Greg Broeker, Ted Broeker, and Madonna Broeker; brother-in-law Vic Doedtman; 29 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maureen, his sister Maggie Doedtman, and brother-in-law Lee Griffin.
The family also expressed appreciation to Kenny Schwerman for his dedicated service to Gerard following his accident and to the many caregivers who assisted him over the years. Their acknowledgment highlights another part of Broeker’s story: the people who supported him as he navigated the challenges of his later life. While the available obituary does not provide additional details about his accident or medical circumstances, it makes clear that caregivers and close supporters played an important role in his life.
Those wishing to honor Broeker can attend a Celebration of Life from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 5, at The Effingham Event Center Pavilion. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, with burial at St. Anthony Cemetery. The family has requested memorial contributions to the Statewide Independent Living Council of Illinois. Through his advocacy, faith, family relationships, and commitment to service, Broeker leaves a legacy rooted in helping others.
