Vienna, Georgia, became the scene of deadly violence during homecoming weekend after gunfire erupted near Pine Street early Sunday, leaving Jaquavion “Scooter” Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb “Caleb” Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville, dead. Authorities said the shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. while more than 1,000 people were gathered nearby for a neighborhood block party connected to Dooly County High School’s homecoming weekend. Deputies were already patrolling the area when reports of gunfire began coming in.
Investigators said the violence involved two locations about a block apart, creating a chaotic scene as people tried to understand what was happening and get away from the gunfire. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said more than 50 shots were fired. Deputies responding to the locations found two people deceased, later identified as Jaquavion Jackson and Macaleb Jackson. Their deaths transformed a large weekend gathering into a tragedy for families, friends and a community that had expected a celebration.
The shooting also produced a significant number of injuries. Authorities reported approximately 35 injured people, ranging in age from 14 to 51. Officials cautioned that the reported injuries did not necessarily all result directly from gunfire. Some people were hurt while trying to flee the scene, including injuries reportedly connected to vehicles as people rushed away. The range of ages and circumstances illustrates the broad impact of the disorder that followed the shooting.
Crisp Regional Hospital treated many of those affected after the violence. Hospital officials reported that 26 victims had been treated there by Sunday afternoon, with some requiring admission, emergency surgery or transfer to other medical facilities. Those numbers remained part of a developing situation, and the exact nature of individual injuries was not fully detailed. For families waiting for information about loved ones, the aftermath likely involved urgent medical decisions and uncertainty.
For the families of Jaquavion and Macaleb, however, the central story is the loss of two young men. Jaquavion was known by the nickname “Scooter,” while Macaleb was also known as “Caleb.” Authorities have released limited biographical information about both victims, leaving many details about their lives outside the shooting unknown. Their deaths nevertheless represent a profound loss for relatives, friends and others who knew them before the violence ended their lives.
The circumstances leading to the gunfire remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly established whether either victim was specifically targeted, and no motive has been announced. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities as detectives interview witnesses, examine evidence and work to reconstruct what happened at the two locations. No suspect identification, arrest or criminal charges had been publicly announced in the information provided, meaning major questions about responsibility remain unresolved.
The violence has cast a lasting shadow over a weekend that was supposed to center on homecoming and community celebration. Instead, families are grieving, injured people are recovering and investigators are working to establish how the shooting unfolded. The scale of the gathering also underscores why the shooting affected so many people and required a substantial emergency response locally. As the investigation continues, additional facts may clarify the sequence of events and those responsible. For now, the deaths of Jaquavion “Scooter” Jackson and Macaleb “Caleb” Jackson remain the defining tragedy of a night that ended with two families mourning and many others searching for answers.
