Andy Payton committed his career to education and athletics, leaving a lasting impression on each student he encountered. As an Instructional Strategist II BD/LD at Waterloo West High School, Andy was recognized for his patience, understanding, and talent for bringing out the best qualities in his students.

He embraced teaching with a unique mix of firmness and kindness, always making sure that every student felt acknowledged, supported, and capable of achieving excellence.

Before he returned to his hometown, Andy showcased his abilities at Manhattan High School and Ankeny Centennial High School, where he was equally respected by both students and faculty.

His commitment to special education stemmed from his belief that all students should have a shot at learning and succeeding, no matter the obstacles they faced. His tranquil nature, uplifting spirit, and dedication to growth rendered him not just an outstanding educator but also a guiding light for many young individuals.

A proud alumnus of Waterloo, Andy completed his education at West High School before continuing on to the University of Iowa and Upper Iowa University. It was here that he laid the groundwork for his teaching career and discovered his passion for assisting others to achieve their potential.

His approach to coaching emphasized the importance of character building, teamwork, and resilience in addition to winning matches. Students affectionately called him “Coach Payton” or “Mr. Payton,” appreciating his knack for turning every obstacle into an opportunity for learning.

The community has rallied together to honor him, with one heartfelt message encapsulating the shared sorrow:
