As reported by Coroner Donnie Grimsley, the shooting took place around 8 a.m. during a conflict at the 24 Hour Spot located on Highway 301 in Dillon. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Townsend with gunshot injuries. Unfortunately, despite the urgent medical response, he was declared dead shortly thereafter.
Dillon Police Chief David Lane shared that investigators have pinpointed a person of interest; however, no names have been disclosed, as the inquiry is still underway.
Those who were acquainted with Burnie portray him as a warm-hearted, sincere individual who was a well-known and amiable presence within the neighborhood. Dorian Thomas, the manager of the 24 Hour Spot, noted that Townsend would visit daily and frequently lend a helping hand around the store whenever assistance was needed.
“It was shocking; I couldn't wrap my head around it being him,” Thomas remarked. “I just couldn't fathom — what could he have possibly done to provoke someone into doing that to him? It broke my heart.”
The heartbreaking loss of Townsend has left his family, friends, and community members grieving as they come to terms with the absence of a person who dedicated so much of himself to others. The community honors him as a diligent, trustworthy, and altruistic individual whose compassion resonated with many.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted into the details surrounding the shooting incident.
In fond remembrance of Burnie Ray Townsend — a truly good and sincere spirit whose absence will be profoundly felt and always remembered.
