 CHARLEMONT, MASS. — The Charlemont area is grieving the tragic loss of Darek Harvey, a 20-year-old former student-athlete from Brattleboro Union High School, who sadly passed away in a single-vehicle accident last week. As reported by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Harvey was the only individual in his car when it crashed into a tree on Burrington Road around 4:45 a.m. on Friday. The vehicle ignited shortly after the collision, and the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

The loss of Harvey has profoundly affected his family, friends, and the entire community. His mother, Heidi Hier, conveyed her sorrow in an emotional post on social media, sharing, “These last few days have been the most difficult of my life… My heart feels shattered into countless pieces, and it's irreparable. I am overwhelmed with emptiness, confusion, loss, pain, and profound heartbreak. How can a mother carry on after losing her child, her only child?” She characterized Darek not just as her son but also as her best friend, her companion in various adventures, and her twin in many respects—a connection that enhances the depth of this tragic loss.

Darek was passionate about hockey, playing as a goaltender for the Brattleboro Union High School ice hockey squad.
