Derek Witzenman Taken into Custody; Overnight Collision on Lowell Connector Results in One Fatality

Derek Witzenman Arrested;- One individual lost their life in a collision resulting from a driver going the wrong way on the Lowell Connector during the night.

Authorities from Massachusetts State Police reported that they arrived at the scene of a severe accident involving two cars at approximately 1:15 a.m. on the Lowell Connector. The incident necessitated the closure of all inbound traffic lanes close to Exit 5A until 4 a.m.

Initial findings suggest that a driver traveling the wrong way in the inbound lanes, heading outbound, is responsible for the collision. The wrong-way driver, named Derek Witzenman, 29, from Woburn, faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and negligent driving.

Emergency personnel transported the driver and a passenger from the other vehicle to Lowell General Hospital for a Medflight transfer to Boston. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to their injuries later. Their identity will not be disclosed until their family has been informed.

State police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
