LOUISVILLE, Ky — The family of Matt Sweets, who was a victim in the recent UPS cargo plane accident in Louisville, confirmed his death on Friday. His sister, Michelle Sweets, conveyed the sorrowful news via Facebook:
“With a heavy heart, I must share that he passed away this afternoon after fighting valiantly in the ICU. The overwhelming support and care from our community have been incredibly moving. We will provide details regarding arrangements within the next couple of days. For now, please remember his girlfriend Brooke and his two young kids in your prayers, as well as the rest of our family.”
With this tragic event, Matt Sweets becomes the 13th identified fatality due to the plane crash that occurred on Tuesday around 5:20 p.m. Although officials have not disclosed the names of all those who perished, UPS confirmed that among the casualties were three crew members.
A GoFundMe campaign launched to aid the family states that Matt sustained burns to 95% of his body from the explosive aftermath of the accident. He is survived by his two young children and his partner, Brooke. Friends and relatives are coming together to support them during this challenging time.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing. During a briefing on Wednesday, a representative from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) suggested that the MD-11 aircraft may have experienced an engine loss shortly after takeoff, which played a role in the tragic event. Investigators continue to analyze the wreckage and compile details to understand the complete timeline of incidents.
The Louisville community, together with UPS colleagues and those close to Matt, laments the loss of him and all others impacted by the crash. There will be updates concerning memorial plans and ongoing inquiries in the days ahead.
In Loving Memory: Matt Sweets will be cherished for his devotion to his family, the happiness he shared with others, and the bravery he displayed during his final struggle. Although his life ended too soon, he leaves an enduring influence on his children, loved ones, and the wider community.
