Cheney’s family announced that he succumbed to complications arising from pneumonia and heart and vascular illnesses on Monday, November 3. He departed peacefully, surrounded by relatives who praised him as a “good man” and a “noble giant.”
In truth, Cheney’s impact will endure well beyond his life as the individual accountable for conflicts that have resulted in the deaths, injuries, and displacement of millions internationally; and who aggressively sought to curtail liberties for Americans while establishing the foundations for authoritarian fascism in the U.S.
Cheney is likely most recognized for his role in crafting the “war on terror,” which guided the U.S. into wars after 9/11 that have resulted in a death toll of at least 4.5 million over the span of twenty years, with 38 million people displaced thus far.
Serving under President George W. Bush and alongside Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Cheney transformed the United States’ strategy regarding warfare, the pursuit of “terrorists,” and the monitoring and criminalization of Muslim populations throughout the U.S.

Cheney wielded extraordinary influence in the vice presidency, acting as the functional president as he spread the false narrative of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and subsequently devastated Afghanistan, Iraq, and various other nations in the Middle East. When reports emerged detailing the U.S. military’s horrific misconduct in Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay, Cheney aimed to use the guise of “combating terrorism” to rationalize actions deemed by others as war crimes.
The war on terror continues in a literal sense in ravaged nations like Yemen, Syria, and Somalia, and in a more indirect manner through the resulting refugee and humanitarian disasters. It also established the justifications utilized by leaders such as President Joe Biden and Donald Trump to rationalize U.S. backing of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
