The community of Florence is in shock today after the passing of Charles Burkley Jr., 39, an Army veteran and father who tragically lost his life Wednesday afternoon in a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 57.

According to troopers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection with Frank Cochran Loop. Burkley was heading south in his 2002 Ford Explorer when a vehicle traveling north made a left turn directly into his lane. The resulting crash was fatal for Burkley; the other motorist did not sustain injuries and is working with the authorities. Currently, no charges have been filed.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

Burkley, who served as a Technical Engineer in the Army, is remembered by his family and friends as a person embodying quiet strength: a dedicated father, a dependable friend always ready to assist, and a man whose friendly smile could light up any space.

“Charles was extremely friendly and always available to help those in need,” remarked his longtime friend Marcus Tate. “Whether your mower was broken, your child needed advice, or you simply wanted someone to talk to, Charles was there without hesitation.”

His passing has resulted in a tremendous show of support. A GoFundMe campaign launched by fellow veterans has already exceeded $75,000 within just one day, aiming to support his children and family during this difficult time. The VFW Post in Florence is open 24/7 for anyone looking to share memories or mourn collectively.

Funeral plans have yet to be finalized, but services with full military honors are anticipated for early next week. The section of Highway 57 at Frank Cochran Loop was closed for several hours following the accident. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
