The community is in deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Brian Merchant, aged 64, and Laurie Ridgway, aged 56, two cherished individuals whose lives were unexpectedly ended on November 18. Their deaths have left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken as they cope with the shock of this event and the subtle, unseen threat that took their lives away.
On Tuesday morning, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Maine State Police and Emergency Medical Services were called to 505 North Wade Road for a welfare check. What they found was profoundly tragic—Brian and Laurie had both died in the home they shared. First responders quickly verified that neither individual had survived, leading to the swift involvement of investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal.
As officials investigated the scene, they discovered a sorrowful reason: the furnace exhaust pipe in the house had been incorrectly installed and had become detached, which allowed harmful exhaust fumes to infiltrate the living area. Evidence strongly suggests that Brian and Laurie fell victim to carbon monoxide poisoning, a silent and odorless threat that provides little to no warning. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will carry out comprehensive examinations, but initial findings clearly illustrate the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Although their lives ended much too early, the stories of Brian and Laurie are much larger than the tragedy that took them. They were individuals who infused warmth, love, and companionship into the world. Together, they built a home, a life, and a deep bond that was evident in the care they showed each other. Friends and neighbors recall them as compassionate, diligent, and immensely supportive people who consistently looked after those in their community. From friendly chats across the yard to offers of assistance without hesitation, their presence significantly enhanced the lives of those around them.
Their loss serves as a serious reminder of the necessity for safety in our homes—but even more so, it symbolizes the absence of two lives that were profoundly meaningful to many. As the State Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents of Maine to ensure that carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are properly installed and functional, and to arrange regular inspections of heating systems, the community continues to honor the memory of Brian and Laurie with heavy hearts.
During this period of mourning, may the families of Brian Merchant and Laurie Ridgway draw strength from each other, find solace in shared memories, and gain comfort from the knowledge that their community stands with them. And may Brian and Laurie rest peacefully, remembered not for the tragic circumstances of their departure but for the lives they led, the love they experienced, and the warmth they shared with others.
Forever in our hearts.
