The town of La Grande is in shock following the tragic revelation of two individuals who were missing—29-year-old Dale Burke and 16-year-old Drake Hill—both of whom were found dead on Friday in a vast area in the northeastern part of La Grande. What initiated as two distinct missing person investigations has now ended in profound sorrow, leaving families, friends, and the entire community grappling with the immense loss felt in such a brief period.
On Friday morning, shortly after 11:30 a.m., personnel from the La Grande Police Department were conducting follow-up work on an ongoing investigation when they stumbled upon the body of Dale Burke, who had been unaccounted for since October 27. Dale was discovered dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As soon as his body was found, officers promptly secured the vicinity and called for additional support to begin a proper investigation. The absence of Dale had greatly affected those who were close to him—his loss was deeply felt, and his return was longed for intensely. However, those wishes turned into mourning as the truth of his passing became evident.
Unfortunately, the tragedy did not stop there.
About ten minutes later, in a different area of the same field and around 100 yards away, law enforcement uncovered the remains of 16-year-old Drake Hill, who had been reported missing since November 3. Drake also seemed to have succumbed to a self-inflicted injury. The close proximity of the two locations raised immediate concerns, but preliminary investigative reports suggest that the circumstances surrounding their deaths are believed to be independent and not connected.
In accordance with protocols for investigations of deaths, the Major Crimes Team was mobilized, incorporating personnel from the La Grande Police Department, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and the Union County District Attorney’s Office. This collaborative effort aims to ensure a thorough and precise examination of all evidence, not due to any suspicion of foul play, but because every life merits a full and respectful inquiry into its final moments.
A police chaplain and a Victim’s Advocate were also brought to the site to assist families with next-of-kin notifications, providing compassion, support, and a reassuring presence during this overwhelming tragedy. Investigators are actively working to collect drone footage, security camera recordings, and additional evidence from the vicinity as the inquiry continues.
The loss of Dale and Drake has created a lasting effect—one that reaches far beyond the field where they were discovered. Their relatives are now navigating a grief that is difficult to articulate. Their community is faced with questions and sorrow that have no straightforward answers. Everyone affected by their narratives is reminded of the silent struggles that many endure.
In memory of Dale Burke and Drake Hill, may their spirits find serenity.
May their families be enveloped by strength, comfort, and unwavering support.
And may the La Grande community come together in love, healing, and a renewed dedication to safeguard those who feel invisible, unheard, or isolated.
If you or someone you know is having a tough time, please seek help. Support is available, hope is real, and you are never truly alone.
