Suspect Charged in Death of WakeMed Campus Police Officer
The Garner Police Department has filed charges against a suspect related to the shooting death of Officer Roger Smith from WakeMed Campus Police, which took place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex situated near U.S. Highway 70.
Around 9:00 a.m., Garner Police officers were dispatched to investigate a reported shooting occurring in the lobby of the emergency department. Upon their arrival, they discovered Officer Smith, aged 59, who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate medical attention provided by emergency personnel, Officer Smith did not survive his injuries.
After a thorough inquiry and in consultation with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, a suspect named Benji Martin Jr., 29, from Garner, NC, has been charged with murder in relation to the death of Officer Smith. Medical responders present at the scene characterized Officer Smith as a hero, stating that his actions may have prevented additional casualties. His bravery and dedication reflect the highest standards of law enforcement.
