The police department in Garner has accused a person regarding the fatal shooting of WakeMed Campus Police Officer Roger Smith, which took place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex along U.S. Highway 70.
Around 9:00 a.m., officers from the Garner Police Department responded to a call about a shooting occurring in the emergency department's lobby. Upon their arrival, they discovered Officer Smith, who was 59 years old, suffering from a gunshot injury. Despite the rapid life-saving measures taken by the medical team and emergency responders, Officer Smith unfortunately did not survive his wounds.
After a thorough investigation and consultations with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, the suspect, Benji Martin Jr., 29, from Garner, NC, has been charged with murder in relation to Officer Smith’s death.
Witnesses from the medical staff present described Officer Smith as a hero, indicating that his actions were likely instrumental in preventing more casualties. His bravery and dedication to service represented the finest principles of law enforcement.
“This act of violence is both tragic and devoid of reason,” stated Garner Police Chief Adams. “Officer Smith spent his life safeguarding others, and even at the end, he prioritized the well-being of those around him. Our heartfelt sympathies go to the Smith family, the WakeMed Campus Police Department, and the entire WakeMed team. The Garner community shares in your grief today.”
Detectives from the Garner Police Department remain in close cooperation with the WakeMed Campus Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and the Wake County District Attorney’s Office to ensure a comprehensive examination of all evidence related to this incident.
