A 27-year-old individual named John Henry Walston, Jr. has been apprehended in Escambia County on suspicion of murdering two young children and deliberately igniting a fire in a mobile home located at the Grand Oak Mobile Home Park on Flaxman Street. This unfortunate event transpired on Friday, and officials are still uncovering the grim specifics.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office reports that Walston is charged with the murder of 9-year-old Vayden Orum and 7-year-old Rayden Smith after allegedly attacking one of them. The fire that Walston reportedly started consumed the mobile home, from which he managed to flee. He was among two adults who needed medical care at a nearby hospital, alongside one child.
Records from the jail indicate that Walston’s home is in the vicinity of Flaxman Street, and neighbors confirm that he resided in the trailer with his family. Tyler Smith, Rayden Smith’s father and Vayden Orum’s stepfather, disclosed in an interview with WEAR News that Walston had been an acquaintance for many years. He also verified that the property where the fire took place was owned by Walston.
Witnesses recounted that the children's mother courageously entered the fiery trailer in a desperate effort to rescue her kids but had to back away because of the extreme heat. She was subsequently transported to a hospital for care.
Walston is facing multiple severe charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of sexual assault against a minor under 12, one count of arson, as well as the killing of an animal, since a dog was found deceased inside the dwelling.
Walston is currently held in Escambia County Jail without the option for bail, with his initial court hearing set for November 26. The local community is in disbelief over the shocking nature of the crime, and authorities are actively pursuing further investigation into the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
