The Hanover community is in sorrow over the passing of Melissa Smoot, a caring physical therapist whose commitment impacted numerous individuals. Melissa passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, and leaves behind a legacy characterized by kindness, professionalism, and an unwavering affection for her family.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on May 2, 1990, Melissa possessed a profound sense of purpose along with a natural inclination to assist others from an early age. She completed her education at Winters Mill High School in 2008 before following her dream in the field of physical therapy. In 2014, she received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University, representing the start of a fulfilling and influential career. Her role at UPMC Hanover showcased her remarkable talent, compassion, and devotion to helping patients recover.
Central to Melissa’s existence was her family. She enjoyed fourteen years of marriage with her spouse, Brian Dale “BJ” Smoot, Jr., and together they nurtured a caring household for their children, Kenyon Tyrus and Kroy Thomas. In addition, Melissa was a loving sister to Michael, Steven, and Lilly Rankin.
Friends and family will have a chance to gather in her honor on Friday, November 28, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM, and again on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 2 to 4 PM at Kenworthy Funeral Home in Hanover. A service celebrating her life will take place at 4 PM on Saturday, officiated by Rev. Dennis Strine. The family plans to conduct a private burial at a later date.
Melissa will be fondly remembered for her cheerful smile, her commitment to healing others, and her boundless love for her family.
