The community of La Salle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, is experiencing deep sorrow following the unexpected death of Mr. Roberto DiMascio, a cherished instructor of World Languages and the leader of the Italian Club.
Roberto's abrupt departure has created a significant emptiness among students, faculty, and alumni, who recall him as not only an outstanding teacher but also as a person full of kindness, humor, and humility.
For 14 years, Roberto committed himself to the mission of La Salle, which emphasizes faith, service, and community. His classroom was not simply a venue for learning the Italian language — it served as an environment overflowing with laughter, curiosity, and exploration of culture.
Roberto motivated numerous students through his teaching to value language as a means of fostering understanding and connection. His enthusiasm for the Italian language and its culture was contagious, and he took great delight in leading his students to fluency while also introducing them to the richness of Italy's art, history, and customs.
In 2024, Roberto's outstanding contributions were acknowledged with the Donald J. Kavanagh, AFSC Heart and Soul Award, one of the highest honors presented by La Salle Academy.
This award honors individuals who truly represent the Lasallian core values of faith, enthusiasm, and community — principles that Roberto exemplified completely. Colleagues and students fondly characterized him as playful, passionate, nurturing, and wise, a blend that made his presence unforgettable.
Whether he was stimulating students with engaging debates or encouraging them to communicate in a foreign language, Roberto's teaching demonstrated his belief that education encompasses not only knowledge but also the nurturing of the spirit.
Outside of the classroom, Roberto's impact spread through his position as moderator of the Italian Club, where he cultivated a sense of community and pride in Italian culture.
With his leadership, students took part in cultural festivities, language immersion opportunities, and service initiatives that deepened their understanding of global citizenship and connections among people. Roberto's passion and genuine love for his work motivated students to view learning as an ongoing adventure.
Those closest to him recall Roberto for his generosity, modesty, and steadfast faith. He rejoiced in his students’ achievements with sincere happiness and faced each day with appreciation and humor. His kindness extended beyond the classroom — he was a mentor, a friend, and a continual source of support for those surrounding him.
In light of his passing, La Salle Academy has organized grief counselors to extend emotional assistance to students, faculty, and staff as they cope with this difficult period.
The entire community unites in sending prayers and heartfelt condolences to Roberto’s cherished wife, Mercedes, and their two children, Dario and Sofia, whose love and strength were fundamental to his life.
