Newport News Individual Accused of Second-Degree Homicide in the Gunfire Death of Nineteen-Year-Old Neveah Harris

A man from Newport News has been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on November 11, 2025, at the Brennon Pointe Apartments. Authorities discovered 19-year-old Neveah Harris in the entryway of an apartment suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was subsequently declared dead by emergency responders on the scene.

The investigation conducted by detectives uncovered that Harris had been engaged in a conflict with 21-year-old Kanye Smith, who was at his mother’s residence at the time the incident transpired. Smith’s mother informed law enforcement that an argument had erupted between Harris and Smith, during which Harris purportedly advanced on Smith brandishing a knife. She recounted hearing a gunshot and then saw Harris fall to the ground as Smith fled the location with the firearm.

Smith eventually came forward on November 13 to provide a statement, asserting that Harris had threatened him with a knife and that he unintentionally shot her while trying to seize the gun from her. Nonetheless, detectives indicated that Smith’s narrative did not align with evidence regarding the injuries sustained by Harris.

Previously, Smith had a recorded history of domestic violence involving Harris from April of the same year. He has been charged with second-degree murder, firing a weapon in a structure with occupants, and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

A court appearance for Smith is set for January 29, 2026. The investigation remains active, and the firearm involved has yet to be located.
